The Northern Cricket League was founded in 1952 and as at January 2015 has 13 full member clubs. In 2000 the League gained accredited Premier League status and became the Northern Premier Cricket League. The League has 2 main sponsors - The Chorley Building Society and Readers Balls.

The Lancashire Colts had been members of the League from 2010 until the end of the 2014 season.
